Advanced Techniques for Uptime Monitoring — Robosoft Blog
Basic up/down checks catch outages. These techniques catch the problems before they become outages.
Synthetic transactions, not just pings
Checking that a homepage returns a 200 status tells you the server is alive — it doesn't tell you that checkout is broken. Synthetic monitoring that walks through actual user flows catches failures a simple ping never will.
Multi-region checks
A site can be up from one location and unreachable from another due to DNS, CDN or regional network issues. Checking from multiple geographic points catches problems that a single monitoring location misses entirely.
Correlating metrics, not just alerts
A spike in response time an hour before an outage is a pattern worth catching. Monitoring that tracks trends over time — not just binary up/down — gives you the warning that a single-point check can't.
Putting it into practice
Start by identifying your two or three most critical user flows — login, checkout, the core action your product exists for — and build synthetic checks around those specifically, rather than trying to monitor everything at once.
How this connects to Upzilla
These are the same principles behind Upzilla, our own monitoring product — multi-region checks, trend tracking, and alerts tuned to actually matter, not just a ping every five minutes.
A simple example
A synthetic check that logs in, adds an item to cart, and completes checkout catches a broken payment gateway that a simple homepage ping never would. Running that same check from three different regions catches a CDN misconfiguration affecting only one part of the world — the kind of partial outage that's easy to miss with a single monitoring location.
